On Saturday 8th June, Henry Oliver one of our top distance swimmers at Winsford Swim Team was going to travel up to the picturesque Lake Windermere in Cumbria to race in the Great North Swim 5km Elite race. To gain entry into the Elite race swimmers have to achieve tough qualifying times in order to gain a spot in the top race of the weekend. The Great North Swim also doubled up as the selection event for the European Junior Championships, so needless to say the top talent in Great Britain were all looking forward to a bit of rough and tumble in the hope of gaining the top spot.
Henry is an experienced Open Water swimmer now having competed at many Regional and National competitions so he was in very determined mood to put on a good performance. Unfortunately due to the weather conditions British Swimming made the decision to cancel the elite race, for Henry, his family and his coach (me), this was very disappointing. Henry was looking forward to the race so much and looking to win the event outright, but the weather put stop to that.
I still wanted to write a report for Henry because he has been a forever presence on the National scene both in the pool and in open water, his commitment to the sport of swimming and Winsford Swim Team has been truly outstanding, everything Henry has and is achieving is thoroughly deserved, even though we couldn't go racing he will always be a champion and a top lad.
In the Open Water format we now look forward to the Cheshire and North West Regional Championships at Salford Quays, a polite reminder that the closing date is Midnight Wednesday 13th June. I think this year we will have a large number of swimmers taking the plunge in the Quays with many swimmers showing a keen interest in racing. In previous years we have had a super number of swimmers racing in Salford, I am sure this year we could have our best number ever. For me the Cheshire and Regional Open Water Championships at Salford is one of the highlights of the year, it would be great to see lots of Oranges swimming in the beautiful outdoors.
See you in the Open Water Pool.
