Open Water Nationals 2022 - REPORT

On Wednesday 10th August we had Ross Hanley, William Line and Jasmine Lloyd travel to Thryberg country park to race in the National Age Group Open Water Championships.

The Swim England Open Water National Age Group Championships is the premiere competition for young open water swimmers in England. The Championships contain races over three distances: 2km, 3km and 5km. Age groups 12 and 13 yrs compete in 2km, 14 and 15 yrs compete in 3km, while 16 yrs and over complete in the 5km race.

The weather today was hot, sunny and very calm, so very good conditions for open water swimming with all races being non wet suits. But also a great day for getting sun burnt and of course eating ice cream.

First to go at 10am was Ross Hanley in the boys 16 years 5km. The course was 1k in length so Ross had the challenge of doing 5 laps as fast as possible. Ross had an excellent swim keeping good pace throughout, and racing hard through each and every lap with 4 other competitors. Ross completed the course in 1 Hour 6 minutes and 45 seconds which was good enough for 9th place. A fantastic swim from Ross who is now very experienced in the open water format.

Next to go was William Line in the boys 15 years 3km. The course was the same for all competitors except for of course William was doing less distance than Ross, so just 3 laps of the course. William was in good spirits going into his race with a full clan of Line’s on the touch line plus cousins so he was keen to impress the cheering family members. William had a great swim, looking comfortable throughout the 3km distance. William touched the banner in a time of 40 minutes 34 seconds which was good enough for 15th place.

Our final competitor to race was Jasmine Lloyd and our youngest swimmer of the day at just 12 years old. Jasmine was racing in the girls 2km race, so yes you guessed it, just 2 laps of the course. People would have thought there would be some nerves for Jasmine with it being her first open water nationals, but no, not a chance, she was excited for the race to begin. Jasmine had a terrific swim being in the middle of the pack throughout, and racing with great determination right through to the end of the course with a sprint finish for the banner with another girl. Jasmine finished in a time of 32 minutes and 28 seconds which placed Jasmine into 14th position.

Well done to all 3 of our National Open Water swimmers. All of our competitors were very pleased with their times and their racing, lots of great experience gained and above all, every single one of our swimmers had a great day in Thryberg.

Well Done again to Ross, William and Jasmine.

Thanks

Dan.
