Scottish National Summer Championships 2017

The Scottish Nationals Championships were taking place from Friday 7th - Sunday 9th July and we had Jordan Gaskell racing up in Edinburgh at the Royal Commonwealth Pool. Jordan gained gained qualification to these National championships due to his performance in the National Qualifying window and as always was in very determined mood to swim fast. Jordan was racing in the 50 Free, 100 Free and 50 Fly in the 17-18 Years age group.
Day 1 - 50 Free
On day 1 Jordan was beginning his Scottish National Championships by racing in the 50 free. Jordan started the day ranked 8th in the 17-18 age group with a time of 25.71, so we knew it would be tight to make the final. In the heats Jordan had a superb swim coming in second with a time of 25.25 which got him into the finals in overall third position. In the final Jordan had another great swim, coming in on 25.26, slightly slower than the heat but another swim which was faster than his old PB. The race was very close with 0.5 seconds separating the top 5, and with all medals being decided on the finish, Jordan came in 5th position but a great swim all the same.

Day 2 - 100 Free
Today Jordan was racing in the 17-18 years 100 free. Jordan went into the event ranked in the top 10 so we were in need of a very fast swim to make the top 8 and a final place. In the heats Jordan achieved a fantastic time of 55.03 which was another PB from his old time of 55.84. Jordan went into the final ranked 4th, so he was in determined mood to try and gain a medal. In the finals Jordan achieved a time of 54.37 which again was another huge life time best but unfortunately was just short off a medal, coming in 4th place and only 1 second off Gold, but again an outstanding swim.

Day 3 - 50 Fly
On Day 3 Jordan was racing his favorite stroke over the sprint distance of 50m, after just missing out on medals on the previous two days he was very determined to reach the podium. Jordan went into the event ranked second so the goal was simple and that was to win. In the heat Jordan had a superb swim coming in on a time of 26.4, just outside of his PB of 26.33 but all the same a seasons best and a great swim which took him into the final ranked first. Jordan was racing the final against swimmers from Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh and after a very strong start he powered home to win the GOLD medal and become Scottish Champion in the 17-18 years 50 Fly, achieving a new PB of 26.19, nearly 0.8 seconds in front of the silver medalist. Another superb swim and an excellent way to finish the Championships. A great three days with outstanding racing throughout Well Done and very much deserved.

Now that the Scottish National Championships are over Jordan will switch his attention to the British Summer National Championships competing in his favorite events of the 100 & 200 Fly, he will be joining Abbie Christopherson (200 Fly), Finn Armitt (200 Fly) & Jay Cushen (200 Brst) in Sheffield in two weeks time competing against the Top 24 swimmers in Great Britain. After the British Nationals we then go onto the National Open Water Champs and then to finish the Home Nation Summer Nationals. So it is going to be getting busy in a few weeks time but before that all our swimmers will be optimising training leading into the Nationals. Good Luck to all our National Qualifiers. Dan.
