Greater Manchester Open Water Swim 2021 (12 Degrees water Temp) - REPORT

On Saturday 15th May Winsford Swim Team travelled to Salford to race in the annual Greater Manchester Swim. This year we had 10 swimmers taking to the quay waters of Salford, ranging from the 500m to the 3 mile distance. The water was chilly at 12 degrees Celsius, so wet suits were in order for all. The weather was changeable, with showers on and off through the afternoon, so in layman's terms the weather proved an interesting challenge for all competitors. But less talk of the weather, and the water temperature lets get to the racing, because let's be honest it doesn’t matter what the conditions Winsford Swim Team are always up for a fight, but it was cold!
The racing was staggered into a number of waves, the 3 mile swum as two waves (Molly first wave, Lorraine second wave), 65 competitors in total, the junior 1 mile was swum as a single wave of 37 competitors (Lewis, Erin, Toby, Jess, Evie & Siena), and then Tom was up in the first wave of 3, in the 1 mile race with 135 competitors, then finally Chris Goldsmith raced in the 500m event.
It was clear from the start the conditions were tough, but all swimmers gave it their very best. The results were superb though, with Winsford highly ranked in all categories. Not only were we highly ranked but it was very pleasing to see some of our younger swimmers taking part, With a special mention for Evie Henshall and Jess Goldsmith. Jess Goldsmith being the youngest competitor in the whole field.

Overall the results were superb, all of our swimmers got into the swim and gave their absolute best, racing with tremendous gusto. But more than that we raced smart, with good pacing and a great attitude.
We have missed racing so very much, it was wonderful to see some live racing again. Well done to all competitors, it was very cold in Salford today, it felt a lot like Winter, fair play to everyone for taking part.
We now move our attention to our Winsford Swim Team Time Trial for our Transition and Bronze swimmers, and the Winsford Swim Team Level 4 Summer Meet which takes place in just 6 weeks time. I am sure all our swimmers will be optimising their training in the lead up to our meets, to give us the best possible chance of success. Please get your entries in and please try and enter a whole range of events, we need to get our swimmers back on the ladder in terms of posting ranking times so we can enter meets down the line, it will be an important meet for us. The meets we are working so hard to putting on are absolutely crucial for all our swimmers.
See you at the pool.
Thanks
Dan.
