Consent Form for Heart Rate Monitors - Juggernaut Swimmers.
The Club has purchased three Polar OH+ heart rate monitors as a training tool for use during practice for Juggernauts. We will use these three for a trial period and if they prove useful and popular we will consider adding more.
Training with heart rate monitors can help swimmers optimise their training by hitting the target intensity of the set and ensuring there is adequate recovery between sets. Over time swimmers will learn what their normal heart rates are at different training intensities, they can monitor improvements in their cardiovascular fitness and it can help prevent overtraining.
The HR monitors connect to the Polar Team app and data will be visible to coaches on their iPads while poolside. We will not use names as labels, they will be HR1, 2 and 3 or similar, so there will be no traceability of the data to any individual swimmer. Additionally we will ask swimmers to fit their own monitors where possible.
The monitors will be used to support training and understanding, and will not be used to pressure swimmers or prioritise performance over wellbeing. They are completely optional and we will require parental consent if your swimmer would like to take part. Additional note: while heart rate monitors are not medical devices, we are mindful of broader cardiac awareness in sport, and parents who wish to explore voluntary cardiac screening can arrange this independently through organisations such as Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).
